why this hole in my trunk?

73 chally has this hole in the trunk. Any ideas why?

Doesn't a body plug go there it sure looks like it to me.

Wow,
  The hole isn't even round. That's right by where the spare tire hold down rod would go, but that bracket looks boogered up to. I think someone has been cutting on your trunk. I have no guess why.

Probably weld a new piece of metal in there is my guess but I'm no body man!!

I would leave it and hide a spare key under the mat!!  Then you can reach your fingers in there to get it!!  j/k   I would weld it shut.  But that is just my $.02.

on my 71' it doesnt have that hole, id weld in a patch then make it look pretty with some body filler etc.

OK, we've worked out it's not suppose to be there but why is it there?
Could it have been for possibly trunk mounted  items, such as a battery, NOS etc??

Hmm, no idea why someone would have that hole in that specific location.  Maybe it was used with a fuel cell in the trunk and that's where the lines were ran????
