Parking brakes with Wilwood read disc
« on: November 20, 2005 - 04:46:11 PM »
I am trying to find out if anyone has set up the parking brakes with the Wilwood rear disc brake kit.

I have a 72 Chally and the parking brake system consists of the single foot pedal cable, long intermediate cable, and the two identical cables that went to each side for the rear brakes. I have installed the Wilwood on my 8.75" rear and purchased the Lokar clevis designed for the Wilwood rear disc setup.

I thought that I could use my existing rear cables as long as I used the Lokar clevis, but from talking with the local Speed shop (Lokar dealer) it seems that the only way to use the parking brake on a Challenger (or Cuda) is to completely bypass the original E-body cable system and use only Lokar clevis and Lokar universal cut-to-fit cables. Is that correct?

Any help on this would be appreciated. I have finally rescued my Challenger from "body shop jail" after about 11 months. It is in primer but all the blasting, sheetmetal and main body work are done. I decided to bring it home and test fit and run everything before taking it all back apart for final paint.

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

I have that Wilwood kit (140-7144) on my 71 Cuda. I made the e-brake system work using the original cable, a Lokar "Ford Explorer" clevis kit (EC-81FC), and some aluminum 1/8" cable ferrules from Home Depot. I had to cut off the original cable ends in order to fit the cable through the clevis ends, then just press/hammer the aluminum ferrules onto the cable ends. Oh, I also removed the cable sleeve-springs because they were no longer necessary.

The end result is, the system works. The park brake pedal is pretty stiff with all of the springs in the system, but the cable has functioned without a problem for over a year now.

Good luck.

Autophile,

Thanks!! I wasnt sure if pressed/hammered on cable ends would work or not and if so, who had them.

Thanks again, I'll post with pics after I get it installed.
