Hey Charlie - the decal goes right over it unless you just want to strip your existing woodgrain. Actually,  it may help the decal adhere better in the long term. I recommend doing the polishing first to reduce the chance of damaging the decal. The metal under the painted bezels already has a nice finish and its very easy to bring it up to near chrome-like finish.

Just finished installing 2 sets of the decals a few months ago, very impressed with the results. These were from http://www.performancecargraphics.com/

The decals are decent, but not qiute like original.

I just redid my wood grain with the bezels P.G.Classic is selling. Altough it doesn't look that way in the picture, the switch panel wood grain matches the gauge panel wood grain. Everything lined up real nice. I like it.  :grinyes:  :ylsuper:
