    Body side moulding

    A few questions: My cuda originally came with a rubber moulding (held on by an adheasive) that ran down the side of the car at the belt line. I thought it was just an add on by the previous owner and removed it. Now as I begin restoring things back to original I was wondering if this option is rare. What was the code for it, and is this trim piece hard to find. thanks Doug

    M33 Is the fender code for Moldings. I have always thought the moldings were attached with rivets, not with adhesive?  :dunno:
    My Challenger is an original body side molding car but I decided (late) not to put them on (a decision I'm am glad I made).

    My car came with aftermarket ones, the originals were removed sometime in it's life.
    Someone replaced them with adhesive moldings that didn't look correct.....

    As for how hard they are to find, pretty tough to find a decent set.

    My 70 came with factory black vinyl body side moldings. These were held on with adhesive - no holes or clips.
    Fender tag VX5 for his option.  There were also pinstripe tape lines on either side of the molding.

    True, my fender read V5X also sorry, don't know what the body side moldings are for M33?  :dunno:

    Wierd, M33 and V5X are both noted for body side molding but on the decoders I tried they don't differentiate it.  As far as the V5_ code, the X was for black.  I guess there were numerous colors you could have gotten so check your codes, bentpshrods.  Don't know how many of these different colors relate to the V5_ option.

    V4* 71 Vinyl Canopy Roof (See V1* for Colors)
    V5* 69-71 Body Side Molding
    V6* 69-71 Longitudinal Stripes
    V7* 69-70 Accent Stripes
    V8* 69-71 Transverse Stripes
    V9* 70 Bumble Bee Stripes
    V9* 71 Longitudinal Stripes
    V5* thru V9* Missing digit represents color choices
    A- Gunmetal
    B- Light Blue
    C- Plum Crazy
    D - Dark Blue
    E - Bright Red
    F - Green
    H - Trans Am Black
    J - Chartreuse
    K - Go Mango Orange
    M - Magenta (1970 Only)
    M - Burgundy (1971 Only)
    R - Red
    T - Tan
    V - Orange
    W - White
    X - Black
    Y - Yellow
    8 - Delete
     
    I have the V5X on my '72 Challenger Rallye.  With this code, there is a possible delete, in my case my car didn't get the side front fender louvers and it's a real JS car.  Not sure either if it's becuase mine was an early production (8/17/71) and I've seen some Dodge promo pics that look similar to my car, with bodyside mouding but no fender louvers.  I dunno. :dunno:

    1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

    Here is a pic of the side moldings that were on (falling off) of my car prior to restoration (obviously)  :biggrin:

    I don't like the looks of them one bit.....although it would save you from door dings!

    Thanks for the pics and info. My build sheet nor my fender tags have the V5X code--the fender tag has M31 which I have found listed as 71 only--belt and hood molding. Don't know what the difference is between this and V5X?  or what hood molding would be. Lots to learn.  Guess I"ll make a decission to put them back on or not after I get it painted.

    I have those mouldings on the side of my 71 chally too and the code on my fender tag is V5X also! good luck on your decoding!  Mine are also the stick on type. The previous owner of my 73 put them on that one but he had them pop rivited on they looked real nice and had reflectors in each end that matched the side marker lights! just a thought! and yes they do cut down a little on door dings but a real little

    I goofed! Just a little, but here it is with fresh images.  :wave:

    These may help?

    V5 moldings would have run down the area about halfway up the body. If the car is not coded for them they were added later.

    The M31 belt moldings ran across the door tops below the windows.
