I think the early ones were metal, but the later years were plastic.
I think you are right! here are 2 pictures of a couple of pentastars that I picked up at a swap meet in the 80's they are original! I know they are NOT reproductions as the market was not real hot for reproductions back then! I have one gold metal one and one black plastic one with a silver metal face on it! I was told back then that the gold one was from the early models like the 60's  and the black plastic one's were from the later models like the 70's! here are the pictures I took one of both sides so you could see what the back looked like also!  :grinyes:

 Me too Dave,
Since the car in question is a 71 Chally, I would think the emblem on the right. It looks like the one on my 70 anyway.  :dunno:  :screwy:

The correct answer would be;  what is plastic Alex.  The plastic ones are gold as well, but obviously the example in the picture is faded.

I think I see where some of the confusion is coming from? Depending on which photo you look at the plastic one is on the left AND the right.

I saved them and flipped one image, here they are again with the plastic one on the right side in both photos.

T/Ake care,
Barry

My 71 has a plastic one on it also and the top is silver not gold I have never seen a gold top on a post 70 car! :dunno: and with the pictures flipped the silver pentastar has a black edge around it so I figured you guys could tell it went with the black plastic backing! sorry for flipping the pieces when we photographed them!

If your plastic one were new, it would be gold. The sun will fade them pretty quickly.
