Leave my #'s Matching motor in or swap out?
« on: December 22, 2005 - 10:42:29 AM »
I was thinking the other day.....(I know I shouldn't do that), and was wondering if I should pull the #'s matching motor out of my car and put in something else to save wear and tear.  It is a 318 with 60,000 miles.  I have another 318 setup (with 360 heads) that I could use or maybe clone my car to a 340 or something.  What are your thoughts on this?

I often think about the same dilemma with my car's 440. The problem is I can't afford a spare bullet. What the heck, drive 'em or someone else will after you're dead!

Number matching is not a huge issue on a 318 car especially if you have the original motor available.

I'd pull the #s motor and freshen it up and set it aside.  Pop in something a little hotter and have fun.  You can always put the #s motor back in for the warm fuzzy feeling.

True, not yet though, what happens down the road???.Considering the 318 was one of the lower end motors in mopars if you look at a 289 MOOstang or a 327 camero their small blocks are being saved too as numbers matching,I think we all under estimate the 318,it is a nice motor in its own right so i say save it and have fun with a motor you dont have to worry about scattering. If it was my car 318  i would want to preserve its original motor. While its a far cry from a 383/440 its still a classic desireable car no matter what the drive train is,if i had a /6 I would preserve it also

If you have the space to set the original motor aside, then why not go for something bigger or more hopped up to have fun with??? You are lucky to have the original engine, no matter what it's size.  :grinyes: Keep the original aside, and beat on something else. That's the perfect plan.

Depends on how hard you want to run the car.
If you just cruise around and don't care about performance I would keep the original engine in the car.
If your a hopeless gearhead like me and you have the room and the money I would pull the original 318 and
install a big block :bananasmi :burnout:

A car with a 318 has no real special added value cause you retain the engine.    Still I agree with above that you should keep the engine.   The value of the car in most cases would be worth a bit more with a 340 motor in it......that is to alot of guys.     A guy once told me that if the world exploded and some pieces were floating in outer space it would probably be a 318 cause they made soooooo many of those 318 motors.    Good dependable motors no doubt but the market doesnt recognize a premium on them.

I had the same choice to make with my car.  It was a 318 originally with a 904 tranny.  I replaced it with a 360-crate 380hp engine and a 727 tranny.  I wanted more power in my car and I didn't want too much weight in the front end of the car (being a convertible).  I've really enjoyed the difference with the motor.  Over time this change has made me decide on other changes like installing Disc brakes, sure grip rear end and playing with the carburetors.  So that the car responses the way I'd like it to.  You may find that one change just leads to another and as another member said, you might as well enjoy the car while you have it.  If you keep the parts you can always change it back to original any way.  On the other side you may stay with that customized ride because it feels so right to you and that what counts in the end.

I had the same question a couple months back and have decieded to keep my # matching 383 in the car. I do not plan on running it so hard that I might do damage to the engine so have deciede to stay with the original.
