fender installation
« on: December 31, 2005 - 08:47:49 PM »
Am putting my car back together this week. Some of you will recall I bought a metal fender to replace the fiberglass fender that was on my car when it was delivered? Anywho, I am doing some minor repairs on this Ebay fender and on a trial fit I find very few of the topside holes line up. I pulled it back off only to discover that the clip nut row on the top of the fender well is bowed like a banana  :bananasmi

The forward and aft most holes line up ok but all the rest are off and are outboard of where they should be. The car has damage history on the RH front corner (thus the cheapie FG fender) but I would assume the hole pattern would be INSIDE not outside. I am gonna fit this as best I can but I thought it odd to have most of the top fastener line out to lunch like that.  :dunno:

seems wrong unless the inner fender was replaced also & not lined up properly

thats a good possibility. I say that because the 3-hole vapor canister bracket on a 72 should be on the core support and its not. The hole pattern is found on the fender well next to the washer bottle neck which would be correct for earlier year models (70-71). I will have to look at the core support more closely and see if it has matching VIN numbers.

You learn so much about a car doing this stuff.

After staring at the Ebay fender and both fender wells for awhile I straight edged both of them and finally figured it out. The top of the fenderwell should be square and very close to a 90 degree angle. My passenger side was bent obd making an open angle. With some wood and clamps and a little umph! I was able to bring it back into square. I then straightened the fender attach flange and now the fender fits a lot better. Ck the pics.

The pass fenderwell doesnt look too bowed there does it? When the front and back bolts were in place the the #3 hole was almost a full inch outbd of where it should be. Anyhow, its all good. No more bananas here!!!!  :bananasmi
