interior painting question
« on: March 26, 2006 - 07:26:08 AM »
Heys  Im pretty new to the game so here we go .I have a 72 challenger and the car is no longer original (motor has been swapped and painted different color) i am restoring the car and would like to make the interior completely black. The original interior was black and white but i think all black would look good. My question is can you paint the interior panels or not?  the interior panels are white can i paint them black? Also the car now has woodgrain panels on the doors with the triangular symbol on them. Does that wood grain or triangle mean anything specials or didi they all all have it.

I think the woodgrain with the triangle was on all the Challengers but am not for certain.

Some folks here have used the SEM dye products for restoring or changing the color on their plastics. Mine were black to start with and looked good but needed some freshening up. I went with the Krylon Fusion paint that bonds to plastic. I dont know what the SEM product costs but it cant be as cheap as Fusion. it worked very well and doesnt scratch. You do have to be careful on the spray technique and apply very thin even coat.

I've used the SEM products and had great results. The other dyes may be just as good, the key to any dye work on plastic panels is PREP. Make sure they are CLEAN. A lot of these dye systems use a prep spray before the color coat, that really helps with adhesion.

I'm slowly starting to strip my interior which was painted black by the previous owner so I can dye them black.  After many years the paint which probably wasn't the best quality is flaking off all over the place and looks really bad.
