Hey guys....what would you ask for your cars ? I just finished shopping for a Cuda and finally found one that was honest. More demand than supply now and good solid cars go for a premium. I would stay away from a Northeast car.Happy hunting.

Just wondering because you never know now a days when it comes to prices...how much work do you think it needs to be a driver? Thanks.

A lot of people like to talk about the value of various cars. We all know that a car is worth what anyone will pay for it! But, I think it's fair to make a couple of observations:

1. The number of e-body cars out there that actually fetch B-J prices are few!
2. '70 - '71 cars have a LOT more market value than the '72 cars! (Sorry, have to state the obvious)
3. Any '72+ car in need of restoration is a hobby...not an investment. That's cool. Some people collect teddy bears, some play golf, some collect pinball machines, some fly model airplanes....none of those things are designed to be an investment.
4. Given point 3, most guys and gals need to jump into a '72+ car wisely, unless they have unlimited funds. Unlike other hobbies, restoring a car is just plain expensive (I just spent $1800 on media blasting this week!). This means that if you are looking for a '72+ car to restore, you need to get in at under $4K or so.
5. ALL of these cars, unless they have been properly restored in the last 5 years, are going to need a LOT of work! Many need a LOT LOT LOT LOT of work. If you can't do the work yourself, it makes no sense to buy a '72+ car (unless you just have to have an e-body) because it's a poor investiment and if you aren't doing the work, it's not a hobby. You are better off buying a completed car...it will be cheaper.
6. Trust no one. See the post on BAD BODY WORK in the Body Shop section. Thus, any car you buy that has been "restored" without doucmentation (pics and stuff) is a big gamble.

This is why I was "diggin" on the $6500 '73 that still needs a lot of work to be a nice car (IMHO).

I got to agree w Steve... BUT watchig the auction sites almost daily -NO I DO NOT MEAN EBAY- you would belive what collector and wanna be cars are bringing. And these prices are being paid by registered dealers not the guy on the street. But I know the expense will be passed on to him OR her

If you really want to know what you can get on the street for your car, go out to www.traderonline.com and do a search for your model year and note the asking prices. You'll be like, wow! That's great! Then, wait 4 weeks and do another search. You'll see the same cars listed for the same money. In other words, people ask all kinds of money for cars but it seems that they can't actually get a buyer at that money. I still can't figure out the auctions...but, let's look over some interesting facts.  First, B-J hand picks 300 cars and offers all of them at no-reserve so that they get all 16% of their money. I'm not convinced that all of the transactions on B-J are real buys. Some of them are likely buy-backs. Second, note that there are few if any '72 E-bodies that get sold at B-J, at least of late. I check the Hemmings Motors News, which has an auction update of all the main auctions, for '72 up E-bodies, and you don't see many if any listed. Seems funny, but there is a real cliff between '71 and '72, even though the cars are essentially identical. Even if you do a hemi-conversion on a '72 up car, it won't bring near the money that a '70 - '71 car. Go figure. As for the '72 up cars appreciating as the supply of '70 - '71 cars dwindles, I don't see that happening. First, we don't know how many more "restorable" '70 - '71 cars are left, meaning that many of those cars have been restored and now just change hands. Second, everything is for sale at the right price. Seems like people who are willing to pay $35K+ for a classic car are prepared to spend more to get the more desirable car.

We ought to start a sticky thread for real-world sale values for all E-bodies. I think that will be very interesting!

  Steve  you said it all there; every thing is for sale for the RIGHT price! The cars people see sitting around and not for sale is because someone has came to the door and offered to buy it for a couple hundred bucks.I had a 67 Chevelle sitting in my driveway and it got so common place I had to rent a garage to hid it.And it did finally get restored!! IMO the 72 Cuda's are much better looking than the Challenger.Don't like the grille at all on the Challenger
