How rare is it ?
« on: January 15, 2006 - 02:52:55 PM »
OK, I'm new, So I'll try not to sound too stupid here.

Been around lots of Mopars for decades, Mostly B & A bodies, however, most of the time it was involved in Drag Racing(30 yrs). Never really cared much about originality, "correct" this or that, just plain old going fast as I could, and "then some". 'Nuff said bout that. Only thing we ever did with E's, was cut 'em up and back-half 'em !

So I went out and bought an E body for a driver. Time to just have a "nice cruiser" I thought, and found a '72 Challenger, 340 3 spd std. Not bad shape, still had the original Engine and trans, numbers matched (like I cared), and drove, steered, and stopped very well. It had the "usual" problem areas like the rear trunk lid lip starting, and pimples above the headlights in the fenders, but overall it is very good, as it was ZIEBART'd" new, and retained very low mileage.

So on to my problem, and what I'm wondering. If theres anyone on here that can offer some imput, who is knowledgeable about E's, please lemme know whatever insight you can offer.

How "rare", if I can use that word on a '72, are non- "RALLYE" type Challengers, that were originally delivered WITHOUT the "Louvres and Strobe" striping on the sides. I always thought these cars looked "porky" with them anyways, and part of why I bought this one, because it didn't have them.

The car is definately a factory 340 car, with broadcast sheet and all the right stuff.  Fender Tag and build sheet denote; 340-4bbl, power bulge hood, 150 speedo and factory tach, dual exh W/cutouts, Buckets, Floorshift 3 spd std, "white accent stripe".

Now "peculiar" to this, is an original old photo "printed" 5/1972, which shows the car, as delivered new, to the original owner, (I'm second), with a "white accent" stripe along the top body line, but NO LOUVRES OR STROBES on the side !Original guy is long dead, can't ask him.

How many 340 Challengers were there in '72, that are basically "Ralleye" pkg cars, with the factory, and deliberate, "omition" of the louvres and strobes on the sides ? Could "Ralleye" pkg Challengers be ordered without the louvres/strobes ?

OK, I'm stupid.

Anybody got an Engine question so I can redeem myself ?  LOL

Bob out.

Well I will tell you what I have in my books
1972 Dodge Challengers--Total Production  18,535
JH23H---340--4-sp---357
JH23H---340--Auto---910
I have NO RECORD of a 340 3-sp manual trans listed
Strangely though I do show a 1972 Baracuda BH23H--25 made
and a 340-3 sp-CUDA--BS23H--1,109 made
why they would put one in a Baracuda and not a Challenger   WHO KNOWS ????
Hope this helps..
POST SOME PIC'S OF THE CAR !!

I do have a sheet from "The chrysler Registry" , a guy by the name of Galen Govier, stating that as of sept 2004, that it's the only one registered. I'll check the numbers on the sheet, but from memory, he states the same 357 manual trans cars, but only the "1" 3 spd., "known to exist" in his Registry of 23 produced ?

Anyways, still wondering about the darn "Louvre/strobe delete" thing. Any ideas ?

Thx

Wow, that sounds like a rare car, and if anyone would know it would be Galen Govier, he's a guru for that sort of stuff.  Doesn't sound like you can get anymore rare then a "1 of 1" car so even if the louvre/strobe delete was odd, I don't think you can get anymore rare, just more unique!    :woo:
