Are there any differences in Cuda doors?
« on: January 04, 2003 - 10:54:04 AM »
Specifically, I'm looking at a 72 door to put on my 70 Cuda.  Does anyone know if there is anything at all different between doors that would cause problems in getting this installation to work?

Also, for show purposes, are there any date codes / part number differences?

No.  All hardtop doors are interchagable.  I believe that there is a difference in convertibles though. Something with the glass.

Doors from any year or body will work, but as gizzard stated, there is a difference between convertible and non-convertible glass (the convertible glass has a angled edge at area where the windshield header and convertible top meet; non-convertible glass is rounded there).  Also, convertible doors have a small black plastic wedge (held in with two screws) next to the door latch.  Its purpose, when the door is closed, is to rub against a spring-loaded brass wedge located in the quarter panel post and keep the door from moving around on the more flexible convertible body.

If your find a true convertible door with glass, consider yourself extremely lucky.

Thanks guys, good info.  Now I want a convertible even more though... :-)

Besides it will work, still didn't hear anything about numbers / date codes (besides the sticker on the drivers door) so if anyone is clear on this, great!

70cuda:

When I get home, I'll look at my books (as well as the doors on my car) to see if there are any numbers particular to any years or body styles.  I will post back tomorow.

Not sure if there are different part numbers for the sheetmetal itself.  The only part number that should be different is the interior stuff.  I am sure there is a date code though.  I doubt any non concours judge would be able to tell the difference.  I will go out and look at my door tommorow since I have the interior out of it and see if there is a date code.

70Cuda:

I looked at my doors that do not have interior panels on them.  There were some number/letter sequences stamped on the doors, but nothing that looked like a Chrysler part number.  I don't know if they are date codes.  The numbers didn't seem to match the following part numbers taken out of Paul Herd's book "Chrysler Muscle Car Part Interchange Manual 1968-1974":

2934748/2934749     Rt/Left 1970 Barracuda doors

3482958/3482959     Rt/Left 1971 Barracuda doors

3611888/3611889     Rt/Left 1972-1973 (1973 built before 11/15/72) Barracuda

3684236/3684237     Rt/Left 1973-1974 (1973 built after 11/15/72) Barracuda

Paul Herd says that there is no difference between doors from different body styles, but I would bet there is a different part number for the convertible door (I'm sure the door had tapped or machined threads by the latch to receive the black plastic wedge and it's two screws).  I can't imagine an assembly line worker taking the time to drill and or tap the door for this convertible-only modification (I have found several errors in Paul Herd's books).  But, in the end, all 70-74 doors, regardless of body style, will interchange (but not all glass).  By the way, the late '73 through '74 doors had a side impact bar added to the inside of the doors.  Hope this helps you out.
