SIZE Matters
« on: January 20, 2006 - 06:11:20 AM »
I will be removing my stock 8 3/4 rear end with sure-grip 3.55 gears for Strange S60 upgraded rear end to handle new HEMI power in my 70 Challenger convertible.

I want to shorten the rear end (no tubbing) to allow wider tires.  I realize that this is for more looks than traction since the power is way more than tires can handle.

Anybody have information on how to measure the width of the new rear end - guess I need to know what new wheels and tires

Have brand new rallyes and t/a tires on there now which I will be selling. :working:

you need to do a lot of careful measuring , a 295 50 15 tire fits perfectly on an 8 " rim with 4" backspacing , you cannot fit anymore tire under there without moving something , the spring would need to be moved 1st , offset mounts would gain approx 1" more , then you are into notching the frame & mini tubbing the body to gain more room . The only other option is to narrow the diff & change the offset of the rim for example narrow the housing by 1" each side & change the whell offset by 1" so you still use an 8" rim but with a 3" backspace for a deeper look

Why not just order a b body rearend? and use a 1" spring relocation kit(Dr. Diff) and A body springs.
There's a few members here that have done this to there Cuda's and Challengers.

I'm with you, cudabuyer...  275's aren't gonna cut it.  I want to see and hear how this plays out, sine I've been contemplating this course of action for when I re-do my Cuda.

Mike at DTS drivetrain suggests the b body width at 59 1/4 inches - but custom wise he says measure the opening of the width of the wheel well first to determine wheel size.  After that buy the wheels and tires put them under the car and measure tire to tire then they will build the rear end

NO TUBBING allowed.

Just wanted big FAT tires more for look

Anybody know the measurement of the opening of the width of the wheel well - my car is out of town at the mechanics for disassembly.

When you say that the 295 50 15's fit perfect with 4" backspace does that mean the tires fit completely within the fender.  I don't want to have to jack the car up.
