March accessory brackets/pulleys on a RB
« on: January 29, 2006 - 06:11:20 PM »
I apparently was one of the first kids on the block to buy the March billet alum. brackets for the alternator and PS pump for an RB engine.  I already had the pulleys, so I added to my investment.  Unfortunately, they failed to mention that they don't work with A/C on the car (since corrected and now mentioned) or with Mopar aluminum water pumps or with aftermarket heads.  Had I known in advance, my purchase would have been different.  Instead I'm left with trying to make these beautiful POS's work. :pullinghair:

They're too thick and required numerous mods to work, even without A/C.  The only two pulleys that line up properly are the water pump and crank.  Even though the Alt. bracket is a stand-alone piece, it still doesn't line-up using the offset spacers provided and the corner had to be rounded because it hit a bolt on the W/P.  The bracket is so thick that I could use a feeler gauge to measure the gap left between the belt and stationary objects.  The PS pump bracket is too thick to accomodate the A/C bracket without extensive modification and actually rubs the W/P belt.  It's not square peg in a round hole, but it's close.

My question is this.  Does anyone know what the acceptable amount of offset is for a belt between pulleys, say 1/8"/foot or something like that and how close can the belt get to a stationary object. I can almost get everything to line up, but not quite and I've got some seriously close clearances. I don't want to be throwing belts into my newly repainted hood at 6000 rpm's.

Thanks in advance.

I do not have a spec for misalignment but with very little it wil roll the belts over & cause problems

Hmmm I didn't have very many problem with the set-up when I installed it . . . one bolt bottomed out and need to be alittle shorter and some adjusting here and there but went together pretty good!

In looking closely at your install, I think having the serpentine belts, stock heads and WP helps alot.  Also, your alt. is placed much tighter to the block than mine.  Is it because you don't have a mech. fuel pump?  Mine has only about 1/2" clearance between the alt. and the FP which forces it to be located up higher. The other big difference is that your inner belt to the alt. doesn't go anywhere to the right of the water pump.  Mine does, going to the A/C compressor.  That causes my biggest clearance problem.

They sure do look good, though.

I do have a mech. fuel pump!  I would think having AC would throw a monkey wrench in the mix!  Good luck!

Didn't see the FP.
A/C definitely does, but it wasn't the only problem.  Each accessory had issues even without dealing with the A/C. (There were others that I didn't even mention in my first entry) The brackets will work, but I am having to do a lot of fitting and a bunch of minor modifications to get everything to gel.  What I'm doing could have easily been thought through by March and addressed in production. For non-A/C installs, they could include an additional spacer to make up the thickness of the missing bracket.

Thanks,

Ive been running the march serpintine pulley set up on my charger for 7 years now without one problem, and the same set up has been on my challenger for 5 years without a problem, of course I dont have AC on either car but March does make the brackets for AC useing a sanden compressor .
