lower control arm bushing removal
« on: March 03, 2006 - 08:20:04 PM »
I have a nifty tool to remove the shafts from the lower control arm, but then what? My replacement bushings consist of a rubber bushing sandwiched between inner and outer metal sleeves. The problem is there is no way to get the old inner sleeve off the shaft, and no way to press the old outer sleeve out of the pivot assembly. Plus, I can't seem to disassemble the new bushing. Heck, all I need is the new rubber jobby. but I can't get it out. What am I missing?

i have not changed the stock bushings , the poly ones need the outer sleeve left in place which is easy to do

Mike, if you want to reuse the original shafts, just get out a cold chisel and hammer.  Then make about four cuts into the inner shell to relieve the pressure on the shaft itself.  A couple good cuts done in-line to the shaft should get the job done.   Or, you can order new LCA pivot shafts through Mancini racing for like $55.00 a pair.  www.manciniracing.com  As for the outer shell that's still left behind in the LCA, just find a thicker washer that fits within the shaft's ID and make a couple tack welds to hold it there.  Then all you need is a bottle jack press to push it out and you're done.  I think it took about 20 minutes total to do two different sets of LCA's with this method.  Good luck!
