Here's a little blurb of information I found on the web. (quoted at http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa4078/is_200506/ai_n13644471 )
It should give you a good start into how their racing career began.

"Legendary racers Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin are the first recipients of the newly created Wally Parks NHRA. Motorsports Museum Board of Directors Award. The drag racing duo will be honored at the third annual Holley NHRA National hot Rod Reunion presented by DuPont Automotive Finishes at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., June 17-19.

Sox and Martin first teamed up in 1963 to campaign a '63 Chevy Z-11, then raced a '64 A/FX Comet before finding their permanent home with Plymouth in 1965. After campaigning altered-wheelbase Funny Cars for the next two seasons, they returned-to the Super Stock ranks, where they enjoyed even more success and played a major role in the establishment of NHRA's Pro Stock category in 1970. The team of Sox & Martin was the most successful in the first two seasons of Pro Stock. The duo claimed nine victories in 13 national events."
