So you think practice welding on fenders etc might help me to know a little more about welding?  Every time i try to heat a fencer up I end up burning a hole in it :( i suck with it!

Part of weilding beyond tehnique is also to know what type of welder is best for the job but also how that welder is set up for the application, say frame rails vs. sheet metal as in quarter patching or replacement. I'd recomend a local trade school, sign up for a night class. Some may even alow your to "audit" the corse, this will require you to do all/most of the work but will not go toward a certificate or degree, also usually the cost is a little less......? You still get the knowledge and a little experience from the class.
