74 Dodge Challenger / 383..Ignition woes...
« on: February 10, 2006 - 07:27:16 PM »
After purchasing a stripped out 74 challenger, I've finally wired everything in the engine bay to start my 383 beast.  I have new parts in the bay, i.e. ballast resistor, electronic ignition, starter relay, ignition switch, etc.

Now the problem:  When I turn the switch to the run position, it engages the starter.  The engine starts but the after I turn it off, you can hear the starter winding down.

I've retraced all of the wires per a wiring diagram and I'm at a loss.  Any ideas??

Tim

ther eis a start postion 12v & a run positoin 12v either they are shorted or you have them reversed , the start postition which triggers the starter is oly activated in the furthest clockwise position

I pulled the run and start wires off the electronic ignition resistor and yes, one has 12v on the run side only and the other has 12v on the start side only (when I'm using the ignition switch).

I pulled off the starter lead from the starter relay to start the engine--to prevent the stater from continually running) and I still cannot find a short.  I originally thought it might be in the nuetral safety switch, but all wires check out with that.

I also swapped in a new starter relay, still the same.

Any more ideas??
