1/4 panel replacement advice/help
« on: February 08, 2006 - 07:55:14 AM »
I want/need to replace my 1/4's on my 71 cuda.  Sherman's say they don't know when this new factory stamped full 1/4 will be in ( next week or end of the year???) the die is still being made.  My car is in the shop now from media, Body shop said 72 1/4 is the same other than side marker which he can change.

I don't want to use just the side skin do to some previous work done to sail panel area which this full 1/4 will fix.

Any advice/input?

Thanks
Cudaaah

If your sail panels and trunk gutters are rotted, you can either hand fabrication that stuff (like I did) or wait for the Goodmark quarters to come out. If you just have rot in the lower quarters and stuff, the skins will work and skins for the 70-71 are readily available. Not sure why your body guy is talking about a 72 quarter (unless he found a complete donor quarter).

We need pics to give better advice!

Hi, I am new to the forum, and I hope this helps. I spoke with a friend of mine who is a Goodmark distributor. He said that the full Cuda quarters will be available in the fall of 2006. I bought the panels for my 72 Challenger, and they are awesome. They look as though they will fit well, and relieve the anxiety from the thought of flex and cracking paint/body filler on the seam when using the patch panel. Also ther is the issue with the tab for the valance that is not formed correctly on the patch panel. My valance fits great on the resto piece. I recommend waiting. If you contact them, they also install these pieces, and my be able to use your car for fit test purposes. I believe you would have to pay for the parts, but the labor may be free. Not true if you have them install after production though. It may be worth a call to them. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input,

Turns out my body guy was told by someone the 72 1/4's were available...I spoke w/ shermans, and they're not.  I suppose I'm being somewhat impatient, I did buy the rest of my metal last month, and at that time, sherman's told me the new 1/4 would be available this month...Now they're saying they don't know when, maybe spring or summer.

I was hoping to complete my car by then...I agree I should wait :pullinghair:

I did find a pair of NOS that are available for $6000 a piece!  Again, I think I'll wait.

Thanks for the update.  We have been told 6 months out for several years now.  I think it's time to give up. :crying:

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Thier process does take some time. As I understand it, they create a die, and stamp the panel over seas and send it back to Chrysler. Chrysler in turn sends it back to make necessary changes and this process goes on until they are satisfied with the stampings. They are then stamped over seas, and shipped to the US for sales. They are not made here in the US. Face it, steel and labor is cheaper in Japan. Keep in mind though they do meet factory specs for thickness and dimensional accuracy. Perhaps someone else can confirm this, but this is the information I have received.

Sounds right to me. Wait for them. Do everything else that you can while you're waiting.

Well here what I've decided...although I agree it would be best to wait, I may be moving from CA to TX in the next 4-6 mnths...My car is currently w/ the body shop getting all metal work done( 2-3 months).  I've decided to have the skins put on along w/ the rest of the work including blocked, but not have the paint done...I'll keep an eye on the body shops work, and if I do to move, I'll just need paint.  Meanwhile if 1/4's do come out, and I'm not happy w/ skins, I can just replace them w/out having to repaint entire car.

Damn what these cars do to us!!!  i'm ready for a spring drive! :burnout:

Thanks for all the opinions
