Correct master cylinder?
« on: February 16, 2006 - 06:52:49 PM »
Am trying to figure out which master cylinder is correct for a 70 Challenger RT/SE 383 with power disc brakes with Hemi suspension. This was a one owner car but has had a power brake booster replaced during it life. The master on the car resembles the hemi unit in that it has a larger capacity front brake reservoir (rear section) than the rear brake ( front section), and the cover is rectangular in shape. The master I was sent to replace it is much smaller with equal capacity storage for front & rear. I thought when I received it that it was probably for all wheel drum type brakes as the fluid reservoirs were the same size. Generally disc/drum combos have different capacities. They both have the correct 4 bolt mount to the booster.
Can anyone give any info and/or pics of what is correct?
Sorry to be so long winded but wanted to give as much info as possible.

Go to this link;

The article was written with AARs and T/As in mind, but I am pretty sure that your car would have the same brake components.

Best of luck,
Barry

The master cylinder you need is the one with the larger size reservoir for the discs. You are correct in that the equal size units are for 4-wheel drum brake cars. using a drum brake master on a disc brake acr is asking for trouble...insufficient reservoir size will cause the master to run dry trying to move enough fluid to apply those discs.

My cuda came with the incorrect drum master (top pic)
Correct master is shown on bottom pic

No such thing as an equal sized reservoir in 1970.

Drum Brake top, disc brake except Hemi middle, Hemi bottom.

Thanks for all the great info and pictures. I thought that the one on the car was the original style but second guessed everything when I received the replacement.
Thanks again
