Milage on title
« on: February 18, 2006 - 12:40:05 PM »
Just wondering about opinions on this.  I got my title back from getting it tranferred to Arkansas and they have odometer exempt on it instead of the actual milage.  :swear: The car has 60,000 original miles.  It's going to be totally restored and is not drivable.  Should I make them change it, or just not worry about it?  I'm not planning on reselling it.  And I'm sure I'll be rolling the odometer over once it's done anyway.  :burnout: Do you think it will affect the value at all? I have full documentation on it, including build sheet, window stickers, fender tag, owners manual, ect.  Just looking for some others perspective on the matter.  Thanks,

I wouldn't worry about it. They do that on older cars, I assume, because there really is no good way for them to know what the mileage really is (given the age and likelihood of failure or tampering). Like you say, you're going to reset it anyway. What you need for value's sake is a good papertrail showing that these are original miles. Of course, if you do a resto, original mileage is not original anymore!

I just got done going thru a similar situation at my DMV.

I went in to the DMV to get a car in my name....the original title from Michigan didnt have mileage printed on the title, but instead had a block for the previous owner to annotate the mileage when the car was sold. The car is an original 70 340 4 speed Convertible with 81,000 some odd miles on it....

The first lady at the DMV(Department of Motor Vehicles) that helped me wanted to put the mileage as unknown....I stopped her as the block on the previous title stated 81K (written in by the previous owner) on it....she told me that it was standard since the previous title didnt have it annotated on the title from Michigan's DOT, then they could not put it on the new title as such....I pleaded with her and stated that by doing this, she is changing a known mileage to an unknown on a classic car and potentially hurting the resale of the car! She told me that there was nothing that she could do about it....I asked for the previous title back from her and proceeded to the manager.

No luck here either! The manager stated that since I could not verify that the engine was the original motor, she couldn't do anything about it....I asked her about a car thats 10 years old then that has its motor replaced...."Can I roll back the odomoter then since the motor is then a new motor....She didnt like my example.... So I left the DMV upset to say the least!

Next day: After doing some thinking on it, I decided to press on with it and let them "ruin" my title and the authenticity of the original mileage. I walked into the DMV, got a number....hadnt even sat down and my number was called! WOW, service is quick today I thought....I got to go to a different lady at the counter and low and behold....she didnt make the mileage a issue and placed the original mileage on the title as its supposed to be! No questions asked! I dodged that bullet! WHEW!

Kinda thought about something like that lemon_twist.  When I went to get my oldest daughters drivers license they wouldn't give it to her cause her original birth certificate from indiana was laminated and arkansas didn't allow laminated birth certificates, even though, thats the way indiana did it.  I just went to the DMV in the next little town and wa-la took it no questions asked.  I think some people just want to be a@@ holes!
