How many miles can you get out of a mopar engine?
« on: February 23, 2006 - 11:43:15 AM »
Assuming you drive an E-body every day, and let's say it's bone stock and just rolled out of the factory, how many miles can you put on each of the mopar motors before they need a rebuild?  Any takers?

I'd venture a guess of about 100-120k before the smokescreen became objectionable.  :icon16:

I'd say 80-95k before I make my own tanker oil slick.   :wavingflag:

Remember, they're not commuter cars.. I beat da P!SS outa my 340 & luv it!
80k on my 340.. is like 320k on my Honda  LOL

I think the factor here is that back then the engines turned many more RPM to get you where you wanted to go. My 3 speed auto with 3:23 gears runs about 3 grand at 67MPH. Today's cars do about 2,100 RPM at that speed. So, that is about a third times more wear on the older engine. Having said that, the magic number was usually around 100,000 miles back then, but even less if you had a larger ratio rear end in it.

if it is rebuilt now probably more miles 150k or so due to better quality seals , pistons & rings etc , but it still will vary depend8ing on how hard you drove it for example if you drove it to work everyday it is hard to beat it up in bumper to bumper traffic & highway driving will not kill an engine as it will be fully warm & you won`t have it floored for 100 miles !!

My 71 318 went 175K running fine until the oil pump quit.  Probabaly could have changed just the pump and gone more, but we rebuilt and have 50K since then.

318 is a bulletproof motor, my moms 70 challenger had a 318 auto in it and she drove it off the showroom floor and drove it for 16 years!!  Never actually failed jsut she sold it :crying:

I just took out the OE engine in my '79 Dodge Magnum in were the Oe owner  started writing things down at 90,000 miles and went on to '89 where he stopped writing everything down because he gave it to his Daughter and then son to go to collage with it @ over 300,000 miles on it.

Yes it still runs and runs good. After he got it back from his kids, he daily drove it 40 miles one way to work. He also put on a performer package on it. Carb, intake and cam. The engine has not been rebuilt and power my Duster come spring.

This engine does not leak or burn oil.

My hot rodded engine never see more than 3 years running due to being into looking for different ways to make power. Hard running and abused quite well, run harder than hard and put away dripping wet. The engines allways come back for more.
Just keep it well oiled and fresh oil never hurt, <LOL> and cool. Good colant as well.
I killed lots-o-GM's under the strain that MoPars keep singing on.

Nuff said.

Well.........
I had a D200, with a 318, that had 112,000 when I bought it, I put another 60,000 miles on it, untill the smoke got too bad. Crank didn't need to be turned either. The reason for the smoke was bad valve guides and seals. LOL
(Someone had put a non plastic chain in it before I had got the truck.)
Lot of it depends on if the motor is overheated, ran hard, oil changes.......warm up habits................
My grampa had a 318 "A" fury, he logged 300,000 plus, with a couple timing chians and valve jobs.

Hey now there's a good one...warm up habits.  What is the best way to take care of my engine with proper warming.  I don't know any better, but generally decided not to get on it until after about 10 minutes of casual driving, and before I ever put it in gear I always let it run for at least a minute, maybe two.  Is there a best practice?

My daily driver i let warm up a bit before i start driving but if i dont have time i just take it easy on it until it warms up, as far as my collector cars, i let them warm up to normal operating temp before i do anything fun with em.
