After market gas gauge stopped working?????????///
« on: March 05, 2006 - 01:15:05 AM »
Cruising down the street after putting in 3/4 of a tank of gas in the Cuda. right out of the blue the gas gauge go's right to E and stopped working :screwy:  It's an aftermarket SW gauge (do to the fact the original doesn't work nether) When I parked it I noticed a lil gas got passed the sending unit in the tank :eek7:  a friend thought that everytime I hit the brakes with that much gas some splashed around by the sending unit and leaked a little. But wouldn't think that would cause the gauge to stop working? I took a test light to the red wire behind the gauge and it's got power to it. How do I find out what the problem is? :1zhelp:

see if you have power at the sender connection at the tank , & make sure you have the ground strap from the tank to the fuel line , without a ground the guage will not read

Here's a simple test. Take the blue power wire connecting to the sending unit, and ground it. In the picture, I took a clip-lead and connected the wire to the ground strap on the sending unit pick-up tube. In this test, your gauge should read full when you turn on the key. If so, then the sending unit is bad. If it still doesn't read full, then either power isn't getting back there, or the ground strap isn't making a good ground anymore.

It's not that hard to swap out. It sounds like you might want to get a new gasket too?  :dunno: There is a possibility the float for the sending unit developed a hole and sunk. I've had that happen.  :bricks1: Just be sure you have less than a half tank of gas when you take out the sending unit.
