Pitman Arm???
« on: February 20, 2006 - 12:05:53 PM »
Hello all!  I'm new to the forum, and new to the hobby so I thought I'd ask for some help/advice.  Recently I purchased a 72 Challenger to start a minor restoration.  For some reason the Pitman Arm was missing on the car.  I've ordered a replacement from both Year One and Performance Suspension Technology put neither seem to fit.   In both cases, the new Pitman Arm will slide on about 1/4 of the way, but that is as far as I can get it to go.  It won't slide up far enough for me to even get the washer and nut started to lock it on.  The steering box seems to be original so why these parts don't fit is a mystery to me.  Do Pitman Arms need to be pressed on somehow?  Am I ordering the wrong part?  Is there a trick to this that I'm not aware of??   Any help or suggestions would be great!   Thanks all.

Welcome , it seems you either have the wrong arm or steering box , not sure which , possibly contact Flaming River Or Firm Feel to see if they can help you figure out which part is wrong or what canwork with the steering box you have

there is a large sector and a small sector box, and the sector refers to the size of the slipon that the pitman fits too.

go to the firmfeel site for a description of the situation.

I have a 70 box, and I had a bear of a time getting a proper replacement pitman arm.  (The 'puters and books at all the parts stores said that 70-74 were all the same and it was not true).
