Engine installation
« on: March 19, 2006 - 03:37:57 PM »
When I put my 440 back in my Challenger should I do it with the 4-speed already installed or would it be better to put the trans in afterward?

was the 4speed already mounted to your bellhousing to the 440 and concentrically lined up when you took it out ?

I tried mounting my Kiesler from underneath but then ended up pulling the motor back out and mounting it all together out of the car.   I had to align the bellhousing and some other odds and ends and I was glad I did it out of the car.  doing it under the car with no tranny jack and on my back simply sucked

If you use a load leveler its real easy to put them as one unit into your car.

either is no fun , you need a tilt adjuster on the engine to get it all in in one piece & it is a pain to lift the trans up from under too

I vote for tranny on the motor.

A trick i used was to lift the rear of the car up and slide it in that way.  You don't have to tilt the motor as much.  Once it's shoehorned in the bay and is roughly centered then lower the rear a little and mount the rear cross member to the car losely and gently lower the motor into the front.  Tried it a couple of times and it worked pretty well.

I have installed them both ways but this last time I put mine in with the transmission installed on the bellhousing. I actually had to put a jack under the back of the transmission as I never had a tilt adjuster as it needed raised up. This takes a little longer to get the assembly in but sure beats trying to get the transmission installed laying under the car. I hope I never have to pull a transmission and put it back in under the car.
