Fuel problem

I have a fuel problem....Still will not run...............
Had a rough running 72 cuda 340, changed the timing chain, and had a hole in the rubber fuel line before a electric pump..fixed all that and still will not get gas to to the carb. I hear the fuel pump running but no gas gets to it.....Do you have to prime the 5/16 sending unit? and how if needed? any ideas?

no priming needed , possibly there is a hole in the tube on the sending unit so it can suck air instead of fuel , or the pump is wired backwards & pushing fuel into the tank

Thanks, but dont think the pump is wired wrong as it kind of ran before, put 2 new gal of gas in it, should I put in more in or look at the sending unit before adding more weight to remove the tank? Does the sending unit need a minium amount of gas to pump?

2 gals will cover the pick up unless it is bent , I would just remove the sender first & check it , add more fuel later

Where do you have the electric fuel pump mounted? It should be back by the gas tank, as close as possible to the sending unit pick up tube. These pumps push the gas to the front, they don't suck the fuel forward like the mechanical pumps do.

Electric fuel pump is mounted up in the engine bay and put in a see-through filter in front of pump, i see it bubbleing but no fuel yet, I have this same set-up in 68 Charger and it works fine, so I will check the sending unit and fuel line from the tank.

Damn, thought I had it, the grounding strap on the sending unit was off and one of the E.C.S. hoses was rotted, got that fixed still won't pump so next weekend I'll drop the tank. What has everyone done with ECS hoses? what happens if you just plug them.

the ECS hoses can be plugged as long as some venting is allowed for the tank to breathe , so that it doesn`t vacuum lock as fuel is drawn out

Dropped the tank, overall it looks really good, pulled the sending unit and the sock filter turned to dust, also the hoses were junk. I will replace,but was wondering if you can test the sending unit or just replace? what are other people doing with putting the tank back on? The tar paper seems ok but should I replace since I have the tank off? I will replace the The fuel inlet gasket, it's junk.
Had some floaties, what is the best way to clean out the tank? (other then just replacing the tank?)

you can vacuum test the line on the sending unit to make sure the line is solid & test the guage with an ohm meter to make sure it reads correctly & make sure the float floats & doesn`t have fuel in it
 you can have the tank steam cleaned by a rad shop
 if the Tar paper is in good condition I would reuse it , it seems to be hard to get the exact material to replace it

I just went through this last Sunday.  I went to www.gastanks.com and got a new tank, sending unit, straps, and stainless steel fuel line (forgot to get those strap mounting screws though).  Only the sending unit couldn't be fixed, just like yours, but I figured: do it once, do it right, and be forever done with it.

I placed the order Tuesday morning online, checked yesterday and the order already shipped.  Today the fuel line arrived, and am expecting the rest of it on Friday.  Now that's fast for cheap shipping!

Thanks, I think I got it, replaced the sending unit and all fuel and ECS hoses, bolted back up, but am waiting to add fuel until I weld a pass side shackle mount that is cracked, was told it fell off a tow truck jack? whats up with that?  :dunno:

Got the weld taken care of, but must say its the uglyest weld I have even seen, I suck, hard to do upside down in a tight space but hopefully it holds, hope to get fuel tomorrow and try to start it up!!!! Then off to Vegas for MATS to see how its suppose to be done (but without the car) hopefully wont lose too much money......... :grinyes:
