Clutch question - 10.5" or 11"?
« on: March 26, 2006 - 10:55:43 AM »
I bought a Hays 10.5" street clutch and flywheel a couple of years ago when my 73 Cuda had a 318 in it but never installed it. I replaced that motor with a built 383 (450hp) and while I was in the process of putting in the new motor I installed the clutch & flywheel I bought for the 318. Everything seems to be installed/adjusted correctly but the clutch is slipping (smoking) like crazy. Should I be using an 11" clutch? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That 10.5 is fine. The racing clutches are 10.5. for a 318 it's more than enough.

Look up inside the bottom of the bell housing and look at the 3 clutch fingers. (You have a Borg and Beck clutch right) (3 fingers).   Use a spotlight if you have to. I bet that they are touching the pressure plate cover. That means that the fingers are bottoming out before they put full pressure on the disk. That is like driving with your foot pushing on the clutch pedal a little bit.      So................. ,,,,,,   If you didn't SMOKE your clutch too much by driving around more and more hoping that your problem would correct itself, you can still save it by reaching in there with a box ended wrench and loosen the 3 pivot adjusting nuts an equal amount until you can see a little gap between the fingers and the clutch hat.  You will have to use a big socket and breaker bar in the front to turn the engine to get to all 3 fingers unless you have a flywheel rotating tool.   That should fix you up.

Oh, BTW. those Bolt heads are thin but go down inside with more threads so don't think the heads will come off unless you turn them all the way out.  By the sound of your problem, you probably only have to turn them 1 or 2 turns at the most.

shelbydogg,

Thanks very much for the help!  I posted on a couple other forums and got the usual "check the free play in the clutch pedal".  I will check the clearance on the 3 clutch fingers.  Sounds like that could be the reason.  I won't have time to check for a week or so as my daughter is going in for surgery.  I'll let you know when I get a chance.

Yes let me know if that works.  I only know what I know because I've run into that problem myself. If you adjust too much, the clutch will be at the other extreme and not release all the way. If the tranny becomes hard to get into first, watch the pressure surface and disk as someone presses the clutch all the way in, to see if you have enough release throw.
Good luck with your daughter's surgery.
