Need pushrod advice
« on: April 14, 2006 - 05:14:49 PM »
Building a 340 engine to replace the 318 in my '68 Charger. The block is .030 over with Comp Cams 224 230 @ .050 hydraulic lifters. The pistons will be flat top and the compression will be about 9:5 to 1. I'm using J heads with 2.02 valves and have bought adjustable Mopar rockers and chrome moly shafts.
My question is regarding pushrods. I know I need the cup type but would like advice as to brand, etc. I'm looking at Comp Cams #7821-16 High Energy 7.234" long. Any others like Lunati??

I use a fair # of Comp pushrods just because they are available , I thought the measurement was 7.500 though ?
Smith Bros is another option for pushrods

I thought 7.50" also but according to Comp Cams website the pushrods for 273, 318, 340, etc. with hydraulic lifters and adjustable rockers is 7.389". Then Summit lists them (the same part #) in their catalogue as 7.234". Maybe that's just a typo? I think some manufacturers list the length of a ball and socket pushrod, as if the ball is in the socket which makes the actual pushrod shorter than the length specified.

I will check on the Smith brand also.

You can get pushrods to measure the distance exactly for what you need. Remember that if you have Hyd. lifters, you'll not want to depress the lifter anymore than it's total travel. That would be .050 and not less than .010. Less than .010 could damage the lifter.
