« on: March 30, 2006 - 10:45:10 PM »
Does anyone have these new LED conversion kits? I am thinking of converting my taillights over to led's. Who makes these kits?

I have a pair of those in my garage and not on my car. The led, doesnt carry over the power to the other light, like how a standard bulb does. or however it works, im not much of a electrical guru. those just didnt work in my case

these guys sell full sized kits

HiTech has a nice product but very pricey.  White LED's are the priceyest to produce for reasons I can't really explain, I just know they are.  But $180 for a circuit board with x amount of led's seems to be too much.
The type that replace the bulb for a small cluster of LED's do have some drawbacks with certain taillight configurations as mentioned above.
If you are crafty and have some time and a bit of $ to waste, you can build your own set like hitech from parts from radio shack or on line vendors that sell LED's, computer case modders are a great source, seeing how they run off both 5 volt and 12 volt, 12 volt being better suited for us due to our 12 volt car systems.  You can use 5 volt, but will have to put a resistor in line.

Mopar Action did a LED conversion on a car last year in an article called "LED there be Light" where the took a truck trailer marker light and modified it to fit into the tail lamp housing.  Sorry, but I couldn't find a web link to it.

I am considering the 90 degree LED replacement bulbs from here http://www.superbrightleds.com/tail-brake-turn.html since the Challenger light bulbs insert from the bottom, not the back.  My concern is that would create a hot spot.  I'm also thinking that the wide dispersion units might work which would probably eliminate the hot-spot but since it's pointed up instead of back, you'd need to make the reflector like a mirror to work well.  Maybe that stick-on chrome junk the young ones use to Pimp their Ride might work for that.
