Manual 4-speed lube
« on: April 02, 2006 - 08:04:46 AM »
I want to change out the lube in my 74 challenger 4-speed and would like to know where the drain and fill plugs are? Also, what lube does everyone recommmend? It's the stock tranny that came with the car and it has about 200K mile on it.
Thanks

I use the gear lube from Wal*Mart. A name brand 85w90 type, plain or synthetic depending on your wallet.  Later models used Dexron type transmission fluid for greater gas mileage and easier shifting in the winter. If you want to use the same as you've used for 200k, replace it with the same color that comes out.
Drain plug is the lowest plug on the driver's side. Fill plug is halfway up the side on the passenger side. Park the car on a level surface and fill it up till it starts coming back out, then stops. Full is even with the bottom of the fill hole. To easily fill, get some clear hose at walmart an shove it onto the pointed tip on the lube bottle. When under the car, stick one end in the trans, then use your 2 hands at the bottle, one to hold the tube on the bottle, the other to squeeze the bottle.
You could buy the big syringe type filler that looks like a grease gun for about $10 for filling but it's a big greasy tool that you'll never throw away. Get the hose.
