Hushpower II inline resonators (earache my eye)
« on: March 30, 2006 - 11:56:56 AM »
currently have 440 with factory HP exhaust manifolds, TTI 2.5 exhaust with H pipe, Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers, going to turndowns at the rear .   :working:

I have over-insulated the interior of the car.   :cooldancing:

after 1/2 hour of driving, my ears start aching and its no fun anymore.   :swear:

I was looking for solutions and came across Flowmaster HushPower II 'Resonators'.   These go inline with the exhaust, in addition to the mufflers, and are intended to mellow the noise.

http://www.flowmeister.com/products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_163  (SIC, but it works?)
Anybody heard anything about these and if they are worth it ?
they are 89$ each from Summit and backordered.

for that much I wonder if I should maybe just get different mufflers altogether ?

(anyone know a muffler quieter than a Dynomax SuperTurbo that still has a little rumble ?)

thanks

Your turndowns, are they right after the axle, before the axle or turndown at the rear valance?
I think your best bet would be to get the exhaust to exit straight out of the rear of the car. 2.5" pipes are good and the Dynomax mufflers are suppose to be the best all around quiet performing muffler.  Sorry can't advise on the resonators.

Years ago I had the same problem with a 74 charger and dynomax mufflers installed in front of the axels. I ended up installing some straight through glass packs next to the gas tank in addition to the mufflers which eliminated the drone between 1800-2200rpm, but the sound out the back was the same which was fine with me. I just finished installing the 2.5 TTI X-pipe system with headers and dynomax mufflers and it is quieter inside the car than the TTI H-pipe system with the dynomax mufflers on my other car, which I have been considering installing the glass packs on since it has the same drone.

Thank you for the idea on the glass packs.  I will give that a look.

Robb,  Talk to Dynomax about a quieter muffler that bolts up to replace your existing ones. They have many mufflers.
On my 440 I run a 2-1/2" H pipe from the headers to the stock over the axle 2" pipes going to stock mufflers next to the tank, to Challenger rear tips. Challengers had the resonators under the rear seats and the mufflers in the rear. I opted to leave the resonators out and now have a healthy sounding exhaust that allows me to hear my stereo on my long cruises. (Power Tour, Mopar Nats) It may not be as free flowing as your TTI system but still sounds like a muscle car.

Just emailed dynomax from their website.

apparently they have some bullet race muflers that are 1/2 price of the Flowmasters that can be used as resonators too.

asked about both replacement muffs and what difference I can expect with the resonators.   will update thread at that time.

thanks !

Hey Robb, I just looked at those bullet mufflers at the Dynomax web site, they look like basically the same thing I used as explained above next to the tank in addition to the mufflers and cured the problem. Hope it works.

got this reponse, not detailed but ......

EDIT:

After some more research today, I am leaning towards installing some summit glasspacks just as Mopar73340 has done in his location next to the gas tank.  What I am finding is that these resonators available today are simply small glasspacks anyway, but with a bigger price tag.

thanks everyone for your input.   Ill post my before and after results in this thread.  Going to try to get it done next week.

EDIT EDIT:

I measured the existing tail pipes about where I could just cut the tubes and slap in a couple of glasspacks and muffler clamps and be off and running......       :-\  not enough length to use current pipes/bracketry.   Would have to redo the pipes from the mufflers back, so this project is going on the backburner.

Robb, Let us know if they work, If I remember when I installed them on my Charger years ago, I bought them from JC Whitney for like 15.00 each so the Summit ones should work. Only difference is mine was a small block and yours is a 440. Thanks.
