Drums to Disc - why?
« on: March 12, 2003 - 01:18:59 PM »
I've seen quite a few folks who have converted from drums to disc brakes on the front for their e-bodies.  What's the rationale behind this?  Lighter?  Better stopping power?

SageCuda,  the main reason people do this conversion from drums to discs is because the discs are indeed better as far as braking power goes.  They tend to stop a modified car or even a stock quicker than the drums.  These conversions can be expensive if you plan on doing it to your car.  Fortunately, mine came from the factory with the HD braking option; discs in the front with larger drums in the back.  Eventually, I'd like to get discs all around so I have a better piece of mind when it comes to abrupt stops. ;)

Along with great stopping power and stability, you have to consider that no matter how much you adjust your brakes, you can never depend on them to not pull to one side or the other. Disks are much better at keeping the car pointing straight during hard stopping.
