Identifying an 1970 r/t
« on: April 22, 2006 - 03:07:11 PM »
I found a big block 70 car locally (FOR ME) since i am going to push the 71 aside until my lawsuit gets underway.

the car is a 70 has the r/t hood is an original bigblock car has a pistol grip 4 speed and has a ralleydash. I have not looked at the fender tag yet but I have a chance to pick it up for a pretty decent price. it'll need a quarter patch, a patch in the firewall that rot near the windshileld wiper motors, a door and some smoothing/interior. Help? Thanks
Ryan

Ryan,

All 70 and 71 R/T's had JS in the first digits of the VIN.

The next two are 23.  They respresent the body type, ie hardtop or convertible.

The fifth cararacter would respresent what size engine came in the car.
If it's a true R/T it would have one of the following:
N-383 Magnum
R-426 Hemi
U-440 Magnum
V- 440 Six Pack

The next number would tell you what year.

The letter after that would tell year where it was assembled.

Ryan, I'm local here in Walnut Creek. I've been studying this numbers thing since November on the 1970 Challenger.
I've got it down pretty good now if you like me to look at with you.
And don't worry, I'm definitly not looking for ANOTHER car no matter how good it is.

27 is a convertible, 29 is an SE in 1970.

First VIN leters: JH is standard challenger and JS is R/T
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I too am looking at a 70 Chally that is in my neighborhood. I think its an original 318 car, now with a VERY fresh 360 and drivetrain. Car is all power, AC, PW, etc. Needs dutchmen panel that comes with the car along with a set of rallyes and several fenders (??). Was supposed to look at it today, prob gonna be tomorrow will let the board know if I pass on it.
