383 Rebuild $$$$????
« on: May 03, 2006 - 10:16:26 AM »
I am looking to have my 383 rebuilt. It will be redone back to stock with maybe just a change in cam but primarly stock.

What can I look for in $$$ to have this done professionally?

It really depends on who you have build it, the condition of your block, and what parts you want in it. Block machining can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to well over a thousand. Also, do you just want to rebuild the shortblock or do you want the heads done too? And are you going to build it or pay someone else? There are a lot of variables, so it is really hard to give you an estimate.

I priced a rebuild kit at about $900

I priced a local pro to do a basic rebuild (nothing over the top...) he said about $1500.
He does everything in-house.

thats what I'm looking for . Nothing over the top. I just want stock performance. I will have somebody else do the work and I want the engine gone over top to bottom. It has sat since 87

I would budget between 1400 and 2500 for a complete engine if the heads can be reused.

I just did a 318 a year ago and it cost me around 2500 total which included a 0.020" overbore, 10/10 on the crank, balance, a new Racer Brown Cam and lifters, a complete set of heads from a reman shop, and long block assembly including the intake.  All in all not bad.
