What material is the windshield and back glass held on with? (the black tar stuff that gets all over the place). Is there a kit I can buy?

Go to a good auto parts store and buy a couple of tubes of windshield Urethane in caulking gun tubes. If they don't carry it, try an Auto Body supply place.

I used this great stuff called windshield weld aka "windshield ribbon" at an auto body/machine shops a few years back. It was like a big roll of black rubber like seal, it was somewhat soft like puddy but hardens over time just like the tube seal stuff. You basically line your windshield frame with it and then press the windshield to the seal. When left out in the sun it pans out a little and seals without the mess of the tube stuff. Really nice stuff, no mess, really quick to roll out, and best of all no water leaks.
It is made by 3M. Here is a link.
