Starts in Run position??
« on: May 11, 2006 - 01:16:33 PM »
I need help!!  Here's the problem:  I turn the key to the run position the starter engages, engine runs, while the starter is still engage.

I removed the wires from the ballast resistor and tested 12 volts on the run side, none on the start side.  When I turn the key, I have voltage on the start side & run side.  Simple enough.

Now when I hook the wires back on to the ballast resistor, I still show 12 volts/high current on the run side, and also a 12 volts/low current on the run side when the key is in the run position.  Shouldn't the resistor block all voltage to the start side when the key is in the run position?

I retraced the wires per the wiring diaghram but I think something is blown, ie. resistor, ecu, etc?  btw:  I've already swapped out my starter solenoid too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tim

Wild guess would be the ignition switch

I thought that as well.  But, I also swapped that out too... :screwy:

Can you give us a little history of the car? Is this a new problem? Did it run fine until this popped up? Have you installed any new parts recently that you haven't mentioned?

When I first got this car, it was pretty much stripped.  No engine/tranny/nothing in the engine bay.  The majority of the wires were there though in the inside and engine bay.

I dropped in a 383 w/ a 727 trans.  Outfitted the engine compartment with the missing stuff.  In relation to my problem, I bought a new voltage regulator, nuetral safety switch, alternator, distributor, etc.

After firing the engine for the first time, I noticed that when I turned off the engine by the key, you could hear the starter winding down.  So, I swapped out the switch thinking that it was inop.  But the problem still existed.

I removed the starter soleniod lead from the voltage regulator to prevent the starter from continually to engage.  The engine runs if I start the car by touching the solenoid lead to the positive of the voltage regualtor to engage the starter.

I'm to the point of the restoration where I'm ready to take it to the paint booth, but I need the car to run by the ignition switch.

Any ideas?

could the starter relay be sticking or maybe have wires crossed going to it?

Tim, Pull the yellow wire on the starter relay and check for voltage with a test light, while the car is running. You should not have ANY voltage on it unless you turn to the start position. Then follow it to the firewall. Inside the car, pop off the fusebox, continue to follow the yellow wire to the Ignition switch. You should not have ANY voltage on that yellow wire anywhere.    You do have the yellow wire hooked to the relay, right?

Sound like to me that you have cross some wire or a relay is bad

ShelbyDogg:  You were right on.  I traced the wire through the fuse block and the yellow ignition wire was junctioned in the wrong block hole.  Someone spliced a wire to spot 9 were the yellow wire was supposed to come out at, and it was even yellow on the engine side--nice.

Thanks again for everyone's help.  She's back to running strong.   :clapping:

Some of the different years use different locations on the block to pass through.  Always compare the wires on both sides. With cars this old, you could end up with a '70 with a '74s wiring harness.
With the prices of E-bodies, many cars are pieced together for a quick sale.

HdCrazyhombre, Check the other wires/colors to make sure that everything else matches up.
