Speedo Cable

can you get a speedo cable for a '73 challenger at the local auto parts store? how hard is it to change the cable? what is involved in a job like this? thanks

Yes, you should be able to get one locally. I see them on E-bay too for around $30, I believe. Just reach up on the left side of your dash, and you should be able to remove(unscrew) the cable from the speedo. The other end screws into the tranny on the driver's side. You will have to fish it on thru though.

I also believe, excuse me if I'm wrong MEKRunner, that the connection at the dash is a snap on, not screw on. See picture of Year One part. You get a finger under a plastic piece that rides over a bump, lift up & pull out, Not hard to do.

to unplug it from the tranny do you just have to get underneath the car and pull it out? or do you need to unbolt parts to get at it?

OK, my bad. 

  The cable does just snap onto the speedo. There is a clip that holds it in place. You just squeeze on the clip to remove the cable. The other end screws into the tranny. You do have to get under the car, but no special tools are needed other than maybe a wrench if it is on tight.

Since it's a 50/50 guess at this point, have you ever had your gauges out before? If you can get in behind them, you could just use a small drill bit to insert in the back of the speedo where the cable would go. Just give it a quick turn, and the needle should move. I'm not sure if you have enough room to do this without at least unscrewing the whole assembly from the dash frame first. I appologize if I am confusing you more.

well as of now the speedo just bounces up and down, so i read some of the other threads and it sounds like the cable needs to be replaced, but it could also be the speedo as well. so hopefully its just the cable

bouncing is a classic calble symptom. cabe is binding & when it unloads speedo jumps up.

Year One is a rip off on that cable! Go to any parts store that carries the Pioneer line (Car Quest, Checker Auto) and ask for Pioneer # CA3027.

I've always used the Lubriplate white lithium grease that comes in the big white and blue tube.
