I dont know about how economical it is to shell out $$$$ for the conversion, but to me it would be worth it just to prove the point that you can make a high performance muscle car using "green" technology.  Besides, if I front 15K to do a complete EFI ethanol conversion on a Challenger now, and it runs a 12.5:1 360 with aluminum heads, I guarantee you that in 10-15 years I will still be driving that car regularly, and it will blow the fiberglass off of any Prius you send my way.  Of course, it won't be historically correct, but that's not why I got into this hobby.

I agree - the first local 85/15 ethanol pump I see, I will be looking to convert the Cuda. At this point I am all for it. Even though u get less gas milage..and by the time it's said and done cost to cost.. as long as it's equal or less that gas, I am on the band wagon.

I'll do anything now to reduce our dependance on foreign oil. esp, with China coming on as the mfg giant.. they well make any underhanded deals to get their piece of the oil pie.

Ethanol next 20 years and then hydrogen. People in this country just need a BIG nudge. Well, the impetus is here.

If Brazil can do it.. we can do it better. I know there's a company that bought property in Toms River, NJ to convert waste and corn to ethanol. They are also leasing Indian reservations for this.. quite ingeneous. Anyway it's coming..

..and coming fast. Good thread. I always wanted a high compression 340  :)

I wouldn't put all my hopes on E85 just yet.  We (the US ) import a lot of ethanol from Brazil and there is supposed to be a shortage ( real or imagined ) this summer, driving the prices way up ( sound familiar ? ).  As for me, I'm looking for an old VW diesel p-up truck and make my own bio-diesel at about .75 a gal.  40-50 MPG sounds good on a daily beater.

71fish,

Here's a site to get started reading.  I'd do a lot of research before I start making any.  There are kits with tanks, pumps, filters etc.  but I'd be inclined to make my own and not spend a ton on the setup.

Here's another good source of info on collecting waste oil, pumps, tanks etc.

Good luck,

Yup.  And E85 is still 15% gasoline.  NPR has a show on called Science Friday.  You can download SF podcasts (free) from iTunes.    Here is one on methanol.  It may not be economically feasible, but it's interesting nonetheless.
There is another show that interviewed Michael Pollen about where our food comes from and the problems associated with our nations corn based diet.  He touches on ethanol.   It’s a good listen.

I agree that bio diesel is the way to go (for now).
