Black area on radiator support

Hi

Does someone have pictures or documentaion on how to apply
correctly the black area on the radiator support on a 71 challenger ?

Don't you have to stand down in the pit and spray it as the car passes by on the line like the factory did?

That sort of sounds familiar...anyone else? 

I remember I read in a book they said something like that so there is a feather effect to it, not really solid black.

I've owned several original paint cars, you could see that the car was sprayed from underneath, including shadows where a part prevented the black from hitting the support. No masking was used, so you'll see some slight overspray and feathering of the paint at the edges.

I do not agree with the "sprayed from underneath the car in a pit" scenario.

Here are two photos from the 173 mile T/A, one overall shot and one detail shot. Look at the paint on the flat surface circled. If the car was sprayed from a pit, the painter was either on a ladder or had arms 4 feet long.   

The other thing to keep in mind is that no two cars will look exactly the same.

The fenders were already on the car when the guy on the line reached in through the grille opening and sprayed the area behind the grille just prior to installing it. The purpose, of course, was so that the color of the car wouldn't show through the grille. On many of my e-bodies there was even paint on the headlamp mounts themselves, seems like especially on the lighter colored cars. Basically, you shouldn't be able to see the color of the car when looking through the grille. I can't remember for sure, but it seems like my black challenger wasn't sprayed with the flat black.

Paint was applied in the paint shop to the body in white after the exterior coat was applied. There were no pits in the body shop.

Great ref. pictures. I guess a line person could be as sloppy as they wanted to be, it was the 70's. Mine needs to be addressed; as you can see it is wrong. Do we agree it should be flat black?
