AAR hood on `72-hinge or pin mount?
« on: December 29, 2006 - 05:41:14 AM »
I have two AAR hoods to work with, one of which is getting modified and put on my `72.I need to decide if I should use hinges or just mount it with four pins. Both need serious fiberglass work in the hinge mounting area to be structurally sound so pinning would be the easier route but this is a street car so looks and the pain of removing the hood are considerations.

I vote hinge mount, no springs, prop rod. You can place dummy pins at the back for that original look if you're concerned about that. Leave off the lightweight springs which can warp the hood and just find a proper length prop rod setup at a salvage yard for around 3 bucks. That hinged hood will be so much easier and you don't have to worry about scratching the roof of the car or having it blow off and getting damaged. Just my thoughts.

I would lean towards hinges just because they would be less of a pain to deal with. Having to remove my hood everytime I wanted to tinker, would get to me quickly, I'd think. I believe I heard that the hinges you would need for a fiberglass hood would be weaker than for a steel hood, but don't quote me on that.

Go with the pin type
It's lighter and it looks real  cool when the hood is sitting on the roof.
