problem with a-pillar on my cuda
« on: April 22, 2003 - 08:15:34 PM »
Hi, I am hoping someone can give me some advice as to what to do with my problem.  As the pictures show, the top of the passenger a-pillar has significant decay, and with my front suspension completely torn apart, I can't haul it to a body shop.  Thanks

If I were doing it, my first choice would be to get that same section from a non rusted donor car.
Remove the rusted area, trim the donor piece to fit and weld it in. If only the inner part of the windshield frame is rusted, not the entire pillar, I would only replace the inner part. Removing the entire pillar may allow the roof to become misaligned. By leaving as much pillar in place as possible, the alignment will be maintained.

If you cant get a donor piece, then just cut out all the rusted metal, trim square. Then get new sheet metal the same thickness, cut and bend it to match the contour of the pillar. You may have to put it in in short lengths because of the compound curves. If you heat it red hot as you put it in, you can work it a lot in multiple directions and match the curves perfect. Grind smooth to finish. Take your time and with just a torch and a lot of patience you can get it done.

The donor piece will be much easier and quicker.
Good Luck.

I had the same problem but on a larger scale including typical rot due to having a vinyl top along the top of the window.  I ended up getting a complete roof from a car including the A-pillars.  From experience, I think what you are showing in your photo is or is very close to where the original roof skin goes on.  My body shop took both roofs, skinned them and left the entire inner frame and then transferred a skin.

Actually, you can see this on my web site: http://www.machlink.com/~albright/resto.html

I thought they were going to cut the whole roof off and replace it but the skinning worked much better.  They never used the A-pillars (and they may still be laying around) but I don't think you really need them and would be better off doing some welding and filling since that's where I think some fill is anyway.

It took me a very long time to even find a roof so good luck.  If needed, I might be able to dig up the A-pillars for $25 + shipping.
