426 Hemi Power Steering
« on: June 15, 2006 - 08:27:16 PM »
I've looked at some pictures of power steering pumps on 426 Hemis. I notice that there is a special way that they mount up on the block because of the mounting bracket. I'm not super concerned now about it being 100 percent stock look . But I would like some ideas on how others got around that problem on this. Looking somewhat close to correct would be what I would like to do.  If you know where I can get the parts or how it can be done, that would be great. Thanks.

So here's what I found out, it has to do with the size of the harmonic balancer on the Hemi. If it's a large one, then the RB and B block power steering cannot be adapted. But if it's a smaller one, it can be done. So now, I need to know what size harmonic balancers I can use for my engine. Also, I'll need the Federal pump, not the saginaw.

So I guess this is my own forum thread. Well, I located a federal pump and I located the Hemi mounting brackets that bolt onto the pump. And I have also located the Hemi power steering pulley that is offset to clear my thicker harmonic balancer. 192.00 for the pulley and 180 for the pump and mounting bracket. Still need all the hoses,90 degree thread fitting, and the cooler fin line also.(next time) But it's a done deal.  :woo:

Thanks Topcatcuda for the information. Although you were a one man show on this thread, there are some of us who can not contribute a great deal yet (I am learning every day) but enjoy learning all we can from this board.

No problem, Confederate. Sometimes these cars are like giant jigsaw puzzles, aren't they?

Well, it looks like the guy I was going to buy the pump from is trying to sell me a remanufactured TRW pump. They are different than the Federal. Apparently, the Brackets for a TRW and a Federal and the Saginaw all differ quite a bit.

Here's the differences in brackets also. The first one is for the Federal and the second one is for the TRW.

Topcat,

I'm useless here, but a friend of mine tried to buy a power steering pump for his 70 Road Runner. He told me they had 3 different models that year, and good luck if I ever need to replace mine.  :pullinghair: I guess this goes with the territory in Mopar land.  :dunno:

Yes, that would sound about right which is why I now held off buying the pump. It was a TRW.  Gotta wait till the right one comes along.   :eek4:....On E bay right now checking it out.  :ebay:
