Trunk Weatherstrip
« on: June 22, 2006 - 06:42:48 PM »
I read a thread from last year about problems with trunk weatherstripping. The people who had problems seemed to be having fit problems, but I've got something else. I got a weatherstrip from Year One, but it doesn't seem to be the right thing, at least as compared to what came off. The old weatherstrip had a slit and fit over the lip. The new one doesn't seem to have a slit, and looks like it's supposed to glue on. Wrong seal? Did I have the wrong seal before?

Mine looks like Bullits drawning and I also use weatherstipping adhesive live MEK. Use clothes pins to hold it while it drys. It works good but ticks off the wife.

Thanks much. Do you guys have any recommendations as to brand? The thread I was reading before seemed to suggest that the Year One stuff was too stiff to allow the trunk lid to close easily.

As a side note, when I put a new one on it pushed the trunk lid up.  Anyone know of a remedy.  Maybe smash it for a couple of years before installation.....  :22yikes:

Where did you get yours? If I recall the other thread, the Year One seals were too hard, annd I think Soft Seal seemed to be good.

Sorry, but can't remember.  It was in '91.  Slept since then.

We got ours from Y1 about 2 years ago.  It looks like Bullitts rendition and we used the weatherstripping adhesive (nasty stuff) to put it on.  And the clothespins work great too!  It seems to be functioning perfectly.  Seals up great.  Maybe they changed suppliers? :dunno:

I got a HARD one too, about 5 years ago.  The profile is correct but my once level trunk to fender look, is now high at the trunk.  I hate buying things twice. I'll have to try the Softseal brand.

Softseal brand here too - quality stuff. Glued in using a 3M or Dow product can't remember. Got it from local auto body supply house and believe it was the same product Softseal recommended but lower cost due to shipping & haz mat fees.

I bought the seal that was for a mid 73 and up to fit onto my 74. THIS ONE SUCKS. It matches the shape of the OEM seal but the trunk lid will not close because it is to stiff/thick.

I bought the 72 metro trunk seal from rockauto.com.  Fits perfect, trunk now closes, and it presses down on the seal all around.
