rear main seal leak

Can you install a rear main seal whith only the trans out on a 383 motor.

Yes you can but it is not easy and it does not always work.

Yes, that is true.  Just drop the centerlink and wiggle the pan out.  I would rather pull the motor and trans to do the seal.  Not everyone has the tools to do this so it can be done in the car but might be more difficult.

Has eny of you done it whith the motor still in the car?
I am getting the transmition re done and would be nise to change the rear main seal while the trans is out as it leaks.

It's not hard but one of the less desirable jobs that is for sure.  Pulling the top half of the seal out can be tricky as can be the installation of the windage tray and gaskets.  I would try and use adhesive next time.  I have heard of a few tricks to get better sealing.  Perhaps CP can validate these.  The first is to have 0.010" milled off of the rear main seal cap.  The second is to stagger the seal faces so they are not on the parting line.  Make sure the seal faces the right direction as it can be installed backwards.  Good luck!

do as Matt said + put a dab of silicone on the seal ends so they glue together
