OK with everythng said what would you do if you were me? The motor will be the 75 cast crank block, heads will be off a 1963 413 so they are closed chamber heads,I am trying for 9.5 to 1 compression, edelbrock intake, edelbrock750 carb, cam I will looking for suggestions but I want to use hydrolic lifter. Tranny is a 833 OD, rear end is a dana 60 with 3.54 gears, and tires are 235 50 r15. I want 5500 to be my redline/shift point. I would like about 450 horse and 450 ft lbs of torque. Is this possible with manifolds or headers a must? I have ceramic coated headers on my GTO with no problems but the challenger is a lot tighter fit so I perfer to use manifold. I should add that I was going to have the head bowls blended and may be a little porting, does it pay if I don't use headers?

I have the Hooker Super comps on w/ copper gaskets.. & not one leak..nothing.

I too have been debating whether I should go with headers or manifolds. But from what CP and I talked about last year together in Carlisle, I'll probably go with manifolds. I've done the header route before and became really irritated when they would develop a leak. Has anyone had any leaking issues with the TTI's? My past experience was...if it's a header, it'll eventually leak. And if it's a manifold...it won't.

You can achieve those numbers running stock HP manifolds, no problem, the rest of the combo will be the key to reaching your goal.

Headers are louder in the engine compartment, not so much the exhaust. Thats the mufflers doing. I have also heard louder than loud cars without headers.
Met a guy with a 273 and 2-1/2 pipes with 2 chambered flow masters. Seriously sound like a major earth quake rolling on by.

The B and E body HP manifolds can make 475hp or so easy, beyond that, you'll be giving a lot up to pumping losses compared to a set of cheapie headers. Also ,the more power you make with them, the more important the camshaft becomes. With your build, I would do a few things. First. Sell those 413 heads. If they arent Max Wedge, they are an old, small, flat port design, and the closed chamber wont do any good making 9.5:1. If they are Max Wedge, you can finance your build with their sale, because the ports are too large for your intended use. Use the open chamber 452 castings. I'd keep the stock valve sizes, but do some bowl cleanup, and have a 5 angle cutter valve job done. KB237 hyper pistons, and a steel shim gasket should get you your 9.5:1. FOr a cam, get a split pattern, more exhaust duration and lift, and a centerline in the 112-114 range. Most modern fast rate cams have specs like that, so you can "choose your poison" so to speak.

I actually have 452 heads on the motor that is currently in there. The bottom 1/2 only has about 45000-50000 miles on it. So maybe I should leave it alone and just pull the heads use a thinner gasket and new cam and call it good?

The fact they are there doesnt mean they are "performnce done". You need to go thru it. have the work done on modern quality machines, and install modern parts, and it will be everything you want. Or, yes, you can mill the heads maybe, slip in some steelies, add a cam, and be happy with whateveer results. I've had "spray bomb rebuilds" with a cam and cheap headers running low 12s. Just not reliably.

porting the heads even with manifolds will make a big difference Cam selection becomes more critical though , you need to keep the overlap down & stay with a 112 CL cam
The bottom ends of the big blocks are strong & if the machine work was done well originally you may get very staisfactory  results just doing the heads for now , for best results it would be good to go through the bottom end but that could be delayed for a few years depending on your budget

There is no doubt when I pull the heads they will go the the local speed shop and have the bowls cleaned up. My last set of heads only ran me about $400 and that was with a lot of port work done to them. They have a flow bench and do outstanding work (Bay Speed) .
