Wheel woes, tube trouble
« on: July 14, 2006 - 12:27:43 PM »
I am having the body shop trim and roll the rear wheel well opening lip a bit in order to fit M/T 28 x 12.5 Sportsmans. I bought one of those specimen and a tube from Summit so that they could make sure it would fit before the body work is completed.

Wheel selection was tough, but was simplified by the fact that not many companies produce a 15 x 10 wheel w/ 5.5” BS on a 5 x 4.5” BC. For me it came down to the Torq-Thrust II’s and the Draglites. Went with the Draglites b/c they were a bit cheaper and available for shipment immediately. Didn't want to hold up the body dude.

Also worth mentioning is that I have installed the bolt-in 3/4” spring relocation kit, and I purchased a 1/4" wheel spacer should the 5.5” BS prove to be too much.

Now I have a problem. I received the Draglites very quickly, but along with them came instructions stipulating that they are not to be used with tubes. (Too bad Summit doesn’t include that in the spec’s or notes.)

So, here are a few questions for the more knowledgeable on Cuda-Challenger.com:

1. Precisely how bad is it to run a Sportsman without the tubes? (Saw on other hot rod sites others that do, but I am wondering if they are tempting fate.)

2. What is the difference between a tubeless tire type wheel and a wheel made for tubes?

3. What wheels are out there that are 15 x 10 w/ 5.5” or 15 x 8 w/ 5” BS that accept tubes?

! have no issues with running a tire without tubes , problems will include the tire going down in pressure because the rim is a 2 piece type & it can leak between the 2 1/2s even if welded together & possible porosity in the tire because it is designed for tubes , generally a wheel made for tubes will have a 1 piece band for the outer rim where the tires sits on
not sure what wheels accept tubes though

I know that you are racing and don't want a steel wheel but Summit sells a Wheel Vintique Rallye wheel 15x10 with both a 5" and a 5.5" back spacing.  That 3/4 in relocation kit that MP sells has to use the SS shorter springs so to get a true 1" move with e-body springs, I made my own 1" offset spring hangers and threw in a b-body rear-end.  (I love having a welder. See pics)

Thanks Chyco, it's reassuring to have your experience behind this. I saw the tubeless preference on a Mustang forum, so I had my reservations.

Shelby- I did end up getting the shorter SS springs. Car is still in pieces, so I can’t comment how they sit. Nice job on your own hangers. I have access to welding equipment at work, but let’s just say it’s been a while and I wouldn’t want a significant portion of the Cuda’s weight sitting on my welds!

I have my Mickey Thompson Sportsmans without tubes and I have to air them up once every month to a month and 1/2. No big deal.
