drill depth on crankshaft for 383/440 for input shaft
« on: July 09, 2006 - 11:07:06 PM »
JUst finished up the new 383 for the Cuda and I need to drill the crank since it had an automatic behind it in its original life. A couple questions:

How deep does the hole need to be?

Is it safe to drill out the crank or should I notch off the tip on the input shaft?

Any other ideas or comments?

I have the pilt bearing in and I mated it once already but the bellhousing wouldn't seal so I pulled it out again and noticed the shaft had marked on the inside of the crank.

Thanks

The 383 in my car had the same problem and my solution was to cut off the end of the input shaft. I remember reading once that cutting the input shaft was better than drilling the crank because it was less of a risk. Also, go with the roller pilot bearing if you already haven't.

what was the distance between the trans & belhousing when it stopped , generally yo uwill only need a 1/4 or so of extra depth

Thanks for the input. I had a 1/8" inch gap approximately. I drilled about an 1/8 off the crank and close to a 1/4 of the input and now I'll see if it works....

OK
I would not have cut the input personally

oops, too late  :22yikes: At least its the OD trans... not the original. Next time the motor comes out, if it does I'll change out the shaft.
