Bumper removal

I hate to aways give you guys these nubbie questions.  But you all know so much and I know so little about these cars.  I am determined however, to do as much of this work as I can and learn while in the process.  Can anyone tell me how to remove the front and rear bumpers.  Thanks as always.

There are large bolts that hold the bumper brackets to the frame. I don't recall how many on the front, but on my 70, there were 4 on the back. I'm not sure on a 73, but there might be some smaller bolt coming down from the bumper guard to the valence panel. In any event, if you remove the valence panel first, it will all be clear to you. These bolts might be tough since they are probably covered in crud. I used a breaker bar. If that doesn't work, maybe you can use some heat. Caution, these bumpers are heavy, especially the 73-74's with the big bumper guards. I wish I could help you more with the front, but it was too long ago for me.

on my '73 chally, look inside the front wheel well at the frame forward of the suspension the bumber braces are held on by two large bolts on either side. At the rear follow the fram rails to the back & there are two large nuts, one above the other + a smaller bolt at the bottom pointing up, it is much easyer if you remove the rear valance 1st.

The front is relatively easy to unbolt from the frame using the two big bolts on each side inside the fender however, chances are that unless you take the valence off, you will not be able to pull the front bumper off through the front.  I just did my 71 challenger and it wasn't bad to unbolt the bumper itself from the brackets and then once the bumper was off, take the one bolt off that holds the brackets together and then you can remove the brackets in two pieces with the valence on.  Put a fender cover or something over the valence as needed to avoid chipping it too.

The back bumper on mine can come off with taking the two bolts on each side off that hold the brackets to the body but first (assuming yours has this) remove the bumper guard bolts (this run vertical and probably just one bolt on each side for the body) whereas the four mount bolts run horizontal.

Good luck this is very doable and then you can get the bumpers rechromed while they are off (or replaced if needed) - assuming that's where you are heading with this.
