Axle Swap - Confirm my reasoning
« on: July 13, 2006 - 04:20:44 PM »
I'm working on assembling all the parts for my axle/leaf spring upgrade, and it's getting more expensive by the moment. Part of the problem is that I've been trying to replace everything that made sense to replace at the same time: brake hoses, shocks, etc. I'm rethinking that idea now.

It seems to me that it makes more sense to do the shackles, hangers and bushings now. If I end up needing bearings or seals, I can pull the axle shafts almost as easy in the car as out of the car, but the leaf springs would require a more elaborate setup.

Am I missing anything in my reasoning?

If your axles end up tough to get out it may be easier to remove axles in the car. The car is harder to pull around than the rear end housing. If your leafs are out and you are going to replace them I would do it now instead of doing it twice.  It is easier to change axles instead of leaf springs. My  :2cents: Good luck on your project.

the raer shackle bushings should be replaced , the front spring eye ones are very difficult to remove & may not need replacing& yes the axle seals can be done later very easily

6pak - You added something I hadn't even thought about. Thanks.

chryco - At this point I'm going to replace the shackles and hangers (mostly so I have an assembly ready to slide in as easily as possible), and all bushings with polyurethane. I'll drive it around a bit and then evaluate what needs to be done with the axle in the future.
