How fast/bright should turn signals blink?
« on: July 16, 2006 - 11:46:37 AM »
I had to replace a burnt out tail light bulb and noticed my turn signal lights seemed "off".  Hard to explain, but they appear to fade in and out when flashing (turn signal on).  The distinction between off and blinking is not that great.  It's the same for all 4 corners, I replaced the flasher unit under dash with no change.

Is this normal, never really paid attention to how the exterior lights looked when turning.

How do your parking lights look when lit? Are they the same as the turn signal lights, or are they brighter? Headlights look bright? How about the brake lights? My nose smells something, but any answer here can help me confirm the problem.

Sorry for the delay in responding, weather was good so I went golfing.

Headlights seem ok, all 4 lights/turn signals are the same brightness.  In other words, the blinkers are not brighter than the running lights.

The turn signals seem to be "pulsing", definitely not blinking.

Thanks for the help

Yeah, I would be looking at bad ground(s) at this point. Each tail light and front parking light assembly gets it's ground connection from making contact with the body of the car. See if you can clean up, and tighten up the areas where they meet. Also, be sure all your bulbs are 1157's.

Is there a common ground point for all 4 corners?
If so where would I check?
It's possible, but I wouldn't think all 4 lights / blinkers would have seperate "bad" grounds?

Thanks for the help!

If you look at a wiring diagram, it makes it look like they have a common ground, but that isn't so. If these assemblies are not tight up against the body of the car, that would explain it. Really, this is kind of voodoo stuff, but if you have one bad ground, it can mess up the rest of the lights. Speaking of lights... are the headlights fine?

Thanks for the help Mike,

As far as I can tell the headlights are ok.
I guess I'll start at each corner and take apart, clean-up, and reassemble each light assembly.

Yeah it stinks, but I've been there. One of my front turn signal assemblies was held on by one screw because the other 2 were stripped.  :swear: The tail light buckets were missing most of the studs that would have secured them to the body of the car.  :swear: Fun City.  :eek4: I believe we are talking about a 70 Chally, correct?
