paint chip in door
« on: July 01, 2006 - 10:50:52 AM »
:swear: :swear: :swear:  Last weekend while working on my car's interior, I opened the door  :banghead: ,and a piece of scrap tail pipe nicked the paint  :banghead:  Not to say it's perfect, but my paint/body does look good. This chip is down to metal , middle of door:swear:

I feel the car is ruined  :banghead::swear:  Any ideas, do I have to paint the whole side? ???  It's not a huge chip, but I know it's there :swear:

I'd probably touch it up with alittle dab of paint and then hit it with a wheel to heat it up and fill the void!  Just my  :2cents: . . . I"m not a body man!

If it's just a chip and not a dink or dent you can fill it in with  a dab of paint, wait for it to dry and sand down the area with a block and 1200 to 2000 grit wet sandpaper until it's flat and most of the scratches are out

Then I would hand buff the area to spiff up the repair and call it done

Do you have any paint that matches?

I've got paint in a spray can ( Plum Crazy )  that's close...I did tape off the chip and sprayed some, close but not exact.   I'll give it a shot w/ the sandpaper, I know they're guys out there that will color match.  If I'm not happy w/ the results, I'll go that route...

Am I being too anal?

At least you know what color you are messing with. My car is not quite so simple. I've been checking out the touch-up paints at Pep-Boys just hoping I could get close. You won't believe this, but I can get closer looking at finger nail polish.  :grinyes:

talk w/ a good body shop...I had a fender on my boat trailer replaced last month, the shop had a guy come out,who was able to color match, much like what's done at Home depot w/ regular paint.  Photo eye??? or somrhting.  W/out knowing what the other fender paint color was.  Came out perfect.

Unless your care is black  I would just go to a body shop supply store as they can color match.  You will probably have to buy a quart though.

Do you have a dent where the chip is? Can you post a pic?  Do you know what kind of paint you have? Lacquer or enamel, urethane? You must touch up with the same kind of paint. If it is just a chip you can first put primer using a brush in the chip.  Then go get the paint matched and get a pint.  When I get it here they first match it with the scanner.  Then they will check and alter the mix until the color is an exact match.  You will need an exact match.  Use this match to fill in the chip with a paint brush.  When your chip is level or a little higher than the surrounding areas you will need to wetsand (1200) the chip area until it blends with the rest of the surrounding areas paint.  Then you can hand rub it with compound and follow with a glaze and then wax.  It takes time but the chip is gone. Sounds like 360Cuda has done it before also.

Yep, mines a driver so I go through the routine about once a year. Lots of chips....Using a good brush is a great idea and so is the primer, I have even been known to dab it with a Q-tip.  Of course I don't have to match the paint 'cause I have a gallon of it leftover

I like that method.  I did stop by an auto paint place today, but I think I'll try the Qtip/primer method first to save the cash.

Thanks

We actually had a conversation about touch up paint in Carlilse, if it is a factory mopar color you can go to a hobby store and buy a small bottle of it, they sell it for model  cars.
